Most of the beauty trends of 2016 can be described in two words: Instagram model. 2016 was the year of full glam and everything on fleek. Whether it was having eyebrows like Zendaya or lips like Kylie, taking the perfect selfie dominated “makeup goals” last year. Here’s what I noticed as the biggest trends.
1. Eyebrows
“Eyebrows on fleek”. Eyebrows didn’t seem to be a big part of makeup until last year. Now, girls won’t leave the house without filling them in. I remember my roommate last year getting so frustrated trying to do her eyebrows because of how hard it is to make them look exactly the same. You want your eyebrows to look thick, but come to a sharp point at the end. A lot of girls like getting them waxed and threaded every few weeks to keep them cleaned up. People definitely considered Zendaya to have the “perfect” eyebrows.
2. Contouring
Contouring was huge last year. The whole point of contouring is using a darker shade to change the shape of your face, usually to make features smaller. Girl mainly liked to contour their cheeks to give them cheekbones and their nose to make it appear smaller. In fact, some of the celebrities that were accused of having nose jobs really just had a good makeup artist.
3. No Eyeliner
Last year, we ditched the eyeliner. Of course, the cat eye was still really popular, but a lot of the every day looks I saw didn’t use eyeliner. In that way, makeup looked more natural.
4. Eyelash Extensions
If you aren’t wearing eyeliner, you want your eyelashes to look really long and natural. Eyelash extensions became really popular last year. Instead of using strips, people had individual lashes put on, usually in a salon. They last a week or two, and you’re not supposed to put mascara on them. I’ve heard mixed reviews about them, but they look a lot more natural then the strips do and would probably be less time in the morning since you don’t have to apply fake lashes or wear mascara.
5. Matte Lipstick
Matte lipstick took over in 2016. People wanted lip colors that didn’t have a shine or glossiness to them. Some lipsticks were close to nude, while others were deep shades of brown or maroon. The first thing that comes to mind is the Kylie Lip Kits everyone was getting. A lot of people liked Colourpop too. Matte nailpolish was also really popular.
6. Freckles
Freckles became really popular near the end of the year, to the point where girls were drawing dots on their face to create the look themselves. I walked into Sephora one day and saw some of the workers with faux freckles and asked them what they used, and they showed me a twistable eyebrow pencil with a small tip that they use across their nose and the upper part of their cheeks. I didn’t notice this being a trend until I saw this selfie of Kylie on Instagram.
7. Short Hair
I definitely saw a lot more short hair this year. I really liked this trend, because I think that short hair looks better on a lot of people. It makes you look more mature and brings more attention to your face.
8. Highlighter
All about getting the glow this year. Highlighting is basically adding shimmer to your makeup so that you shine in the light, like Edward in Twilight. Highlighters at Sephora can cost over $50, which is so crazy because it’s basically a sparkly eyeshadow. I usually will use a golden eyeshadow to do my highlight because it’s easier and less expensive.
9. Wigs
So before, people got extensions when they wanted to make their hair longer. Last year was all about wigs, and making them look as realistic as possible. I noticed a lot more white girls this year putting on a wig at the end of their makeup tutorials to change up their hair color.
10. 2 Braids
Wearing two braids was also really popular last year. Girls would part their hair straight down the middle and do two french braids. I actually really liked this look. I think it’s really cute, and I’ve gotten a lot better at braiding during the last year.
Those are the beauty trends of 2016, and my versions of some of them. I can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store.
